Rug Repair

Repairing an oriental rug is more affordable than most people think. Fixing and/or securing sides and ends is a very common repair over the lifespan of an oriental rug and can typically be completed within just a couple of weeks or less. Investing in repairs not only restores the beauty and stabilizes the rug to prevent further damage, it can often restore the monetary value as well.

If you notice your rug is starting to unravel, it’s important to get it secured and repaired promptly. The longer the rug is not secured, the more it will unravel, which usually means increased repair costs. Here at KC Rug, we repair hundreds of rugs every year. Often rugs will have many options for repair and we are happy to walk you through those options and provide repair costs.

Restoration vs Repair

Although used synonymous, these two terms have different meanings. Restoration is an attempt to bring the rug back to its original condition. Weaving a hole would be an example of this. Rug restoration companies attempt to use the same types of yarn and dyes as the original rug but often some compromises might be necessary. Restoration is more expensive than repair work and we can help you decide if makes sense to invest in the carpet. The first picture is a Persian Heriz that was chewed by a dog. Repairing and conservation is all about preserving as much of the rug as possible to prevent further damage by stabilizing and securing it. This can be achieved in a variety of ways. The second picture is a Persian Sarouk. Over time the ends started unraveling which can lead to the rug pile itself to unravel, very common on old handmade rugs. Instead of choosing restoration the customer chose a repair called overcasting. This repair does not add anything to the rug, it’s purpose is to straighten and secure it so it no longer unravels. It also greatly improves the appearance.

Much is to be considered when choosing restoration or repairs. Some rugs have significant monetary value while other might just have sentimental value. In both cases it can be justified to spend money on restoration.
